Vendor Feature: Ruffa and Mike Photography

Like any other good story, THIS started with love.

Husband and wife, Mike and Ruffa Paglalunan of Ruffa and Mike Photography, prides to capture photos that tell more than just a story, but rather, create a powerful feeling that evoke the truest essence of art, love and life. They are famous for their “epic” shots, which are actually a series of epic-worthy images that they capture during an entire wedding coverage. Why have just one “epic” shot if you could have more than that, right?

What I also love about this creative duo is that their artistic flexibility is beyond measure — they can go from high-fashion vibe one time and go rock-‘n-roll-fun the next. But whatever theme you want them to cover, one thing stays true: they deliver magazine-worthy photos that are crisp, clear, vivid and bursting with vibrant colors. Simply put, they take NO dull photos.

Ruffa and Mike

I asked them how Ruffa and Mike Photography all started, and Mike eagerly shares with us how it all began (you gotta read this one, I tell you, it’s quite sweet and romantic you’ll think it’s picked right out of a fairy tale) :

“Ruffa and Mike love story was born from the love of Theatre and Arts. We met each other in our school theatre group called “Tanghalang Batingaw”.  I took BS ECE and Ruffa is Tourism and we both graduated from Lyceum of The Philippines University. They say it’s a bit strange that an Engineering student entered a Theatre group, but I believe you have to do what makes you happy. And I’m so thankful I joined, because if not, I will regret it for the rest of my life through this group I have found the girl I will love forever.

Everytime we had practice, I always bring my point and shoot. And since Ruffa loves to smile and pose in the camera, I had an opportunity to get close to her and a chance to talk to her. That’s how our friendship started and our love begin to bloom.

Ruffa loves to pose so much and style herself while I am obsessed in photography, so we decided to buy our first DSLR camera which is Canon 350D with 50mm 1.8, if I remember it right that was 2007. Everywhere the road takes us we always bring our Camera and Tripod. Sometimes, others laugh on us seeing Ruffa pose in public while I start focusing my camera and set the timer then run beside her while the time is ticking. We never stop doing it till we achieve the pose and emotion we want. Then we keep on posting it on our travel blog and Facebook account. Until one day, my aunt approach us if we can shoot their prenup. I was very hesitant at first and refuse to do it since I don’t have any idea how to to take prenup photos, I said I only know how to take picture of ourselves. My aunt replied, that it was exactly they like to have similar on what we have in our photos. That is where Ruffa and Mike Photography started.”

“After we post that prenup photos in our Facebook account, lots of friends are asking if we can shoot their prenup too and the most unforgettable inquiry we received is when one asked if we can cover their wedding. Honestly, I doubted myself because we know we never experienced documenting a wedding. But Ruffa is very confident and believes that we can do it, especially that we still have enough time to practice and study the flow and art on how to shoot a wedding. After that wedding day, wow! God is so good! Lots of good feedbacks appeared on our email and inquiries multiplies. This made us decide to formally enter the business and started to be a full time wedding photographers. On the first quarter of 2011, I decided to leave my day job to concentrate on our business and to focus enhancing our skills.”

Ruffa and Mike know that being in the wedding photography industry is not easy — talent is one thing, but it must be fueled with passion and determination to succeed. Ruffa explains, “We all know that being wedding photographers is not easy. You should have the right amount of passion, love and inspiration to make you produce great photos and to push your creativity to come out.”

They too had their own magical moment last Dec. 8, 2012, so it is their edge that they are fully aware of how their clients feel on the wedding day. Besides this advantage, they also use their experience with theatre to bring out the emotions for that picture-perfect shot we all want. Ruffa says, “Theater train us to effectively bring out emotions. Whenever we take photos we usually give the instruction by doing it. Mike and I will act it first and we will tell the couple to do it the way they are comfortable. Also, we ask them to internalize the feeling we want them to show, enjoy the moment and always think of happy thoughts.”

And you know what inspires them to excel more in their craft? Family. At the end of the day, after all the hard day’s work, it’s who they go home to. Ruffa lovingly shares, “Every wedding is challenging and demanding but when Mike and I reach home and see baby RM, all the sweat goes away. So we make sure that we have quality time with the whole family. As long as we are happy together, ‘big problems’ will never exist in our vocabulary.”

Happy Friday cherries! Lovely day today to be giving you something so exquisitely beautiful. Reserve your oohhs and aahhs for later because you’ll be giving away lots of it after you read this vendor feature. 🙂

Cinemaworks has been in the wedding industry, capturing priceless moments in film, for 4 years now and every wedding film they create is a monumental proof that they are here to stay. Exquisite, elegant, creative, classic. Their works are exactly as how they call it — a Wedding Art Film. I love how their videos look like mini movies, it’s really like watching a short film. Their videos are always vivid – the shots are crisp and clear, their story telling is superb, and their video presentation and scoring is film-like. Truly, each Cinemaworks wedding film is an art form at its best, a masterpiece on its own kind.

“It was year 2009 when I started to put up my own name in the wedding industry I learned from the pioneers by working with them as their freelance videographer. I applied the knowledge and technics I learned at the film. Year 2011 was a great year for me by being included in Jason Magbanua’s BIO (Impluwensya) and Weddings at Work Top Supplier Video Teaser 2011. Then the rest is history…”

For someone who has to be creative and innovative all the time, you may ask, what are the things that spark his interest or what inspires a John Marvi de Guzman? He shares, “I am passionate with everything I do, when I want to do something I take time to study and make research, that is what I am passionate about – making Films. I love to play with colors, lights and candid moments. Even when going on a trip I have my Go Pro, camera or cellphone with me. My creativity boosts every time I see something new. I love watching works from other filmmakers as well.”

So, where can we find John Marvi when he’s not tied up with the wedding biz?  “I love speed – most specially bicycles, from motorized to mountain bikes. I usually ride with my Rizal friends, that is my workout. Most of all I love to spend time with my family – with my wife and three kids. Everything I work for and achieve are for them.” (A family man! Okay, that is most definitely awwww-worthy!)

Vendor Feature: Jake Olaso Wedding Films

What a week! It has been a busy one for me, but nonetheless, am so glad I was able to survive it. 🙂 I am so eager to get back here on the blog and give you all the best wedding inspiration there is.

To start this lovely weekend (oh! how I love just the sound of that!), I am so thrilled to be giving you my very first Vendor Feature (Yay!). I will be starting to scout and give you, my cherries, insights on the best wedding vendors to help you prepare and achieve the magical wedding you deserve! It is just fitting to start this with one of the very important vendors in your wedding team — The Wedding Videographer.

Jake Olaso Wedding Films, headed by the very talented Jake Olaso himself, has been in the wedding industry for almost 2 years now and is one of the most promising in the wedding videography field. Heartfelt, handmade stories — their wedding films aim to capture the emotions during the wedding day in the most heartfelt and candid manner. They aim to let their audience experience the wedding mood and feel the moments as if they are actually there.

Asked what inspired him and how he started in the industry, Jake Olaso shares, “I started shooting videos back in highschool (1999) when we are tasked to do school projects that need to have some sort of a video presentation. Back then, we were just playing around with the camera and we really don’t know what is the potential of it. We just shoot and present. Fast forward in college days (2004), we need to make a video again for our school project. This time, I have some knowledge on what we want to shoot and how we like to present it. This sparked my interest in editing videos.”

In 2010, he came across a photography site (yes, Jake was a hobby photographer back then!) and stumbled upon a video section. He watched one video, liked it, watched another one, and started questioning how they do it. He started to be addicted in wedding videos, which he found a tad ironic because he hasn’t attended a wedding in his recent years (except being a ring bearer once upon a time! 🙂 ). Jake was so fascinated on how seasoned wedding videographers do these wedding films and thought if he can do it as well. He shares, “Then I spotted a wedding videography seminar and that’s it. I learned so much and gained new connections that it rocketed me to where I am right now. In 2011, Jake Olaso Wedding Films was born.”

Getting up-close and personal, I asked him what are the things that most people might not know about you? He answers, “Some people might not know that before becoming a wedding videographer, I was a network engineer. Also, I used to be in a band before and I’m trying to get back to it again. I am also looking forward to getting married to my girlfriend for 7 years! 🙂 “

So what exactly tingles Jake Olaso’s creative juices, you may ask?  He explains, “I sometimes do not believe that I am creative. I am just observant and want to learn new things. I get inspirations from my mentors (they know who they are) and other videographers. Sometimes, I also get inspiration when I am not doing anything – when your mind is open. Often times, while watching movies and a few instances when I hear a certain soundtrack. Then, I imagine what would be the scene perfect for this song.”
